Recognition Awards I Scholarship

Superintendent Recognition Award
Believing that the influence of school superintendents is a major factor in improving arts education in school systems across the state, NYSAAE presents the Annual School Superintendent Recognition Award to a New York State school district superintendent who demonstrates outstanding support for, and commitment to, high-quality sequential arts education programs in their schools.  This is one way of recognizing an exceptional school superintendent, and to attract public attention to school-based arts education.

School Board Recognition Award
The School Board Recognition Award is an annual award presented to a New York State school board that has demonstrated support for, and commitment to, high-quality arts education in its school district and community.  This state-level award recognizes districts that have included all four major artistic disciplines - visual arts, music, theatre, and dance - in their programs.  The final selection from New York State is sent to the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network (KCAAEN), to be included in a national pool of nominees.  The national award is administered by KCAAEN and the National School Board Association.

Summer Music Institute
The Kennedy Center/National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute is a 4-week summer music program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.  This program is open, by recorded audition, to student instrumentalists who are seriously considering orchestral music as a career, and who are in grades 9 through 12 or a college freshman or sophomore.  Five selected applicants from New York State will go on to the Kennedy Center for a further selection process.

John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Distinction In Arts Education Awards
The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Schools of Distinction In Arts Education Awards are annual awards presented to schools that exemplify arts integrated education, specifically the role that schools play in providing a creative learning environment for outstanding student achievement.  State winners are submitted for consideration at the national level, where winners receive a modest honorarium to support their programs, a plaque for display in their building, and the opportunity to perform at the Kennedy Center as part of KCAAEN events.

To be considered for the State level of this award, your school's arts education program should have most of the following characteristics:
  • Your school should teach all the arts (music, dance, visual arts, and theatre) as specific disciplines as well as integrated into other subject areas.

  • Your program should use creative approaches to learning, provide appropriate learning environments for teaching the arts, and recognize that the arts are critical and essential to education.

  • Your program should provide opportunities for parental involvement in the educational lives of their children.

  • Your program should provide students various opportunities for learning about other cultures through the arts, enabling them to explore differences in ways that are devoid of cultural bias.

  • Your program should provide community connections that build value and respect for the community by offering students diverse experiences beyond the classroom.
