The New York State Alliance
for Arts Education (NYSAAE) is
delighted to present the
most up to date compendium of
information for both practitioners
and advocates of Arts Education/Arts
in Education. The
Toolkit is a response to
countless requests for information
regarding a wide assortment of
topics including:
-
How can I find money to support
outstanding programming?
-
How can arts education
stakeholders work together to
support a rigorous arts
curriculum?
-
Where in my region can I find an
arts education advocacy network?
-
How can schools and arts
organizations work together to
enhance academic learning
through the arts?
-
What kind of education
background do students have at
each grade level, K-12?
-
How can I successfully integrate
the arts into classroom
curriculum?
-
And more….
In order for us to make sure that
our Toolkit meets the needs
of artists, teachers, parents,
school board members, district
administrators, and citizen
advocates, we surveyed a
representative sample of each
category during the Fall, 2005.
They told us what they wanted to
know and what they wanted others to
know as well. They asked for
information, and they asked for
tools that would help in the
planning, implementation and
assessment of sequential,
standards-based arts instruction.
They wanted to discuss how arts
events (theatrical and dance
productions, exhibitions in museums
and galleries, etc.) and arts
residencies in music, art, dance,
theatre and the literary arts,
provided by credentialed arts
teachers as well as community based
“teaching artists” could enhance the
wider curriculum. They also asked
for guidance regarding their own
professional development and
training so that they could acquire
the skills to use resources wisely
and help others do the same.
Finally, they asked for all of this
in a format that could be expanded
over time, so that new developments
could be added as they occur.
And so we present the Toolkit.
In it you will find the tools and
resources necessary to create,
expand and improve arts education
and arts in education (arts
integrated into standards-based
curriculum) programs in your
schools.
The Toolkit is divided into
several sections, each with an
advisory introduction followed by an
annotated list of resources suitable
to the section’s topic. At the end
is a short and practical
bibliography that includes the
useful books, articles, and special
citations that strengthen the case
for arts/arts in education.
On behalf of NYSAAE, we hope you
find the Toolkit useful and a
means of continuing to provide the
best in arts education/arts in
education in New York
State.
Sincerely,
Carol Fineberg
